Off Season Update

Despite the AFL Central and Northern England League being in the off season there is still a lot going on in the world of football.

On Saturday November 3rd the Western Bulldogs took on Port Adelaide at the Oval in London. It was the first time AFL clubs have played in London since 2006 and it turned out to be a fantastic showcase of the sport.

The curtain raiser to the game was a friendly between the AFL Europe Islands and the Europe Continent. Proudly representing the islands from AFL CNE were Luke Booth from the Huddersfield Rams, Matt Kilheeney and Alasdair Lindop from the Manchester Mozzies, Ian Mitchell from the Wolverhampton Wolverines and Sean Walton from the Birmingham Bears. All players respresented their clubs with pride and helped propel the Islands to a comfortable victory – 11.11 77 to 2.3 11.

The later game was a thrilling match in which the Bulldogs looked to have the game sewn up when they led by over 40 points midway through the third quarter. A fighting comeback by Port gave them the lead with 10 minutes to go, but the Bulldogs responded with a few of quick goals to take a 5 point lead. With only 30 seconds to go Port midfielder Brad Ebert kicked a goal from 50 metres out on the boundary line to give the Power a stirring victory.

All teams from the AFL CNE had a big presence at the game with players from all teams making the trip down to London.

A selection of photos from the day:

  • In other off season news the Birmingham Sharks University team took on the Cambridge on Saturday 17th November. In a high quality game Birmingham showed great courage to come back from 2 goals down at three-quarter time to win by 9 points.
  • On 1st December the Manchester Mosquitoes are hosting 6 other clubs in the now annual Nathan Blakey Movember Cup. The day was a great success last year with newcomers Leeds winning the inaugural tournament. A great day is expected in what is a perfect opportunity for new players to experience Aussie Rules football.
