Season Kicks Off in Wolverhampton

Round 1 saw Wolverhampton host their first ever League Lightning Round.

In the opening games the much-improved Leeds upset reigning premiers Manchester by 6 goals to show that they’re the team to beat in 2013. Nottingham easily account for Sheffield in the other game.

Hosts Wolverhampton took on Birmingham in the third game and in a tight but highly skilled game the Wolverines ended up 4 point winners. In the other game Sheffield put Leeds to the sword to take a 5 goal lead into half time. They ran out of legs in the second half though as Leeds piled on 9 goals with the wind to win comfortably.

Manchester then took on Birmingham, and in a similar situation to Sheffield put on a 5 goal half team lead, only to see a barmstorming Bears outfit play all over them in the second half to win a tight contest. In the other game Nottingham showed they’re still a powerhouse with a confidence-boosting win over Huddersfield.

In the final game of the day Wolverhampton took on Huddersfield. As was the pattern for most of the day Huddersfield kicking with the wind dominated the first half and looked to have the game sewn up. In the second half Wolverhampton played all over the Rams, and with the support of a passionate crowd, they went on to win convincingly.

Ladder and Results to be added to the website in the coming days.

Next week sees the 2012 grand final re-match with Manchester hosting Nottingham. Sheffield take on a much-improved Wolverhampton, and in the league’s newest rivalry the West Yorkshire derby takes place between Huddersfield and Leeds.
